A former sergeant in the U.S. Air Force, Pieretti joined the Patriot Guard Riders, whose motto is “Standing for those who stood for us” in 2005 and, since then, he has escorted scores of veterans’ funerals and also homecomings at the airport on his motorcycle. Pieretti actively serves the Warriors Watch Riders, American Legion Riders, and Golden Gate Harley Owners Group. Along with Tom Perkins of Dudley Perkins Harley Davidson Co. in South San Francisco, he started the annual “Christmas in November” at the Menlo Park Veterans Affairs Hospital where riders and others visit, display their motorcycles, put up a Christmas tree, and donate gift cards.

In 1995, during a devastating fire, Pieretti suffered massive injuries to his lungs, trachea, esophagus, and corneas, and also a stroke and pneumonia. He was given the last rites in the hospital but survived to rehabilitate for 19 months. Against doctors’ advice, he returned to work until he retired in 2006 to continue working at his own business, Pieretti Construction Company, which he had started in 1976. It was while recuperating after the fire that Pieretti began to “give back” to veterans, which he continues to this day in spite of major health issues.
