“I’m 92 years and nine months,” he says, “I put it like a little kid, because in many ways, a kid is what I am.”. A kid who requires a walker. A kid who just began teaching at San Jose State University for the 66th straight year. A kid who once was in a near-fatal car crash but scrambled back from the brink, one leg shorter, permanently in pain. And yet, Gus Constantine Lease, an SJSU living legend, is still working through one colorful, well-traveled, challenging and entertaining life — all drenched in music.

“I whistle just walking to my car,” he says, explaining melody as a source of inner warmth, “I’m always very happy when I go to class” — which the Sioux City, Iowan has been doing, at three universities, for seven decades, A few days ago when Lease slowly walked into day one of his famed “Music Appreciation” class, the 70 students seemed stunned by the sight of this hobbled, aged man, But with a big voice, he asked, “How many of you think I’m God?” When only one hand went up, “You get an A in this class,” he thundered, “The rest of linen ballet slipper with something blue rosettes~linen ballet style bridal shoe ~ line wedding ballet flat you — fail!”..

Gentle laughing bubbled, and once again the seasoned master had arrived. “Gus still has enthusiasm and a great sense of humor,” said classical pianist John Delevoryas, who retired in 1990 from what is today the School of Music and Dance. “Students still rally to get into his classes. That he is still teaching is a sign that Gus has lots of guts.”. That toughness is why Lease tells his classes, in detail, about the harrowing 1967 car accident — femur torn from socket, seven broken ribs, bleeding wounds to head and heart. He wants them to know, despite his frail body, his knowledge is primo and he has much to offer.

“I have a challenge,” says the classically trained baritone, “to give these young people some ideas about life and music.”, To familiarize the class of nonmusic majors with what they could learn, Lease told them a bit about major scales, keyboards, syncopation and woodwinds, He promised adventures in can’t-miss concerts, quizzes, midterms, ancient instruments linen ballet slipper with something blue rosettes~linen ballet style bridal shoe ~ line wedding ballet flat and the blessed diversity of music — from Gregorian chant, to Broadway tunes, to classical, to the breadth of ethnic music, to American jazz, “This class alone,” he cracked, “will be worth about $3,000.” After sitting through that first class, an extra eight students tried to enroll..

“Gus is living history for students,” said Fred Cohen, director of the School of Music and Dance. “He can talk about times he shared with Aaron Copland and Andre Kostelanetz. For most, those are names in history books. For Gus, those are musical interactions.”. The lecturer first strolled onto the SJSU campus in 1950 — long before his latest group of students’ parents were born. He cherishes a photo from that year of a good-looking, bespectacled young man, dashing across campus in a tux with tails.

“I was 27 years old,” he says of his favorite image, “and I was heading over to Morris Dailey Auditorium (on campus) to give a concert and the house was packed full.”, Lease landed in San Jose after a year of teaching at the University of Colorado and four years at the University of Oklahoma with orders to build up the vocal and choral programs, Variously, he constructed a mega-choir that numbered 350 voices, and performed oratorios and cantatas with school orchestras, He launched an 88-voice men’s glee club and one for women with nearly 200 members, He sang classical solos with myriad orchestras and helped linen ballet slipper with something blue rosettes~linen ballet style bridal shoe ~ line wedding ballet flat institute the opera workshop that later brought San Jose’s own opera diva Irene Dalis to campus..

Lease produced the first on-campus Broadway show — “Kiss Me Kate” — and for a year he had his own local pop radio (KSJO) program — “Gus Lease Sings.”. Even during the turbulent ’60s, when the campus was ablaze with anti-war anger, his classes and performances survived absorbed protests, including in-class flag-burnings. From 1984 through 1989, he served as music department chair. Of all his undertakings, his favorite was the “Gus Lease Show,” a variety review that performed for troops all over the Western U.S. and overseas.

“Bob Hope’s USO show got linen ballet slipper with something blue rosettes~linen ballet style bridal shoe ~ line wedding ballet flat a quarter page inside the Stars and Stripe military newspaper” on a tour of Asia in 1965 during the Vietnam War, Lease proudly unfolds a yellowed keepsake: his troupe featured in a two-page Stars and Stripes spread, They toured military bases in Europe the following year and were set to head to the Mediterranean in 1967 until … the terrible crash at 13th and Julian Streets, when Lease’s little car was T-boned by a big Impala, “I died,” says Lease, “but I believe life is electricity, so maybe there was a short-circuit that somehow got reconnected.”..
