An open call was put out by Sunnyvale visual arts coordinator Kristin Dance for children in kindergarten to fifth grade to make their mark on the public art project. In August, 16 children participated by painting and–with assistance–glazing poppy flowers at the bottom of the mural. The park’s new mural consists of two pieces affixed to a Murphy Park building, on the side of the structure facing North Sunnyvale Avenue. One scene depicts the Murphy family journeying to Sunnyvale in a covered wagon, and the other shows Sunnyvale’s orchard rows and a steam-powered train as a reference to Murphy Station and the South Pacific Railroad that passed through Martin Murphy’s property.
