Playwright Marcus Gardley goes deep into the issue in his play “The Gospel of Lovingkindness,” which premiered at Chicago’s Victory Gardens Theater in 2014. But as Ubuntu Theater Project’s production in Gardley’s Oakland hometown demonstrates, it’s all too resonant in any community plagued with poverty and crime. This new company presents powerful and provocative dramas in nontraditional theater spaces that mirror the settings of the plays themselves. One of those productions last year was Gardley’s “Dance of the Holy Ghosts” in Oakland City Church, and now Ubuntu kicks off its 2016 season with another haunting, lyrical play by the same author in the same space.

“The Gospel of Lovingkindness” centers around the senseless, nearly random murder of Manny, a bright and sunny black teenager growing up on the South Side of Chicago, He’s played by William Hartfield with such loquacious exuberance that you can’t help ballerina statue girl figurine decoration, bookshelf decor, collectible, ballet teacher gift, greece but be enchanted by him in the very short period that we get to know him before we find out he’s gone, Dawn Troupe carries the heavy weight of fathomless grief profoundly as Manny’s mother Mary, The first several scenes play out as monologues of different people addressing the audience as if we were Mary as she remains immobile, nearly catatonic with mourning..

Director Michael Socrates Moran’s intimate staging gives these scenes tremendous immediacy as the actors stand almost within arm’s length of us, talking to us as we haunt Mary’s memories. Dorian Lockett is funny and touching as Manny’s father Joe, coaxed into paying for an expensive pair of sneakers by the irresistible lure of a home-cooked soul food meal that he describes in mouthwatering, rhapsodic detail. (And yes, Manny/Emmanuel’s parents are Mary and Joe — the names in the play are laden with Christ imagery.).

Hartfield doubles as a parallel teenager, Noel, an aspiring basketball player in the projects, frustrated by his seeming inability to find a job that pays decent wages, Halili Knox is a sympathetic presence as ballerina statue girl figurine decoration, bookshelf decor, collectible, ballet teacher gift, greece Noel’s wisdom-spouting mother, who just wants him to make better choices in life than she did, Knox also plays Mary’s hilariously brash friend and a couple of achingly subdued witnesses to the killing, In addition to the touching semi-buffoonery of Joe, who just wants to woo Mary back to life, Lockett plays a variety of outsize comedic characters (a coach, a Walmart manager) and silver-tongued bad influences, both political and criminal..

Rolanda Dene drifts through the play as the 152-year-old friendly ghost of journalist and early Civil Rights leader Ida B. Wells. Ida is continuing her activism in the afterlife to fight to get the guns off the Chicago streets, seeing no difference between this slaughter and the lynchings she exposed when she was alive. Although Dene’s Ida is an amiable presence, the ghost’s role in the play feels like an awkward fit that never quite transcends its own oddness. A TV debate about getting tougher on crime versus investing in underserved communities makes some excellent and inspiring points but breaks the dramatic flow of the piece. But once the seemingly disparate threads of the two mothers and sons start to come together, they do so with devastating beauty.
