When not working in his dad’s grill, Lekas attended Oakland High School. He played football for the team and violin in the school orchestra. After high school Lekas joined the Army. After less than a week in the Army’s cooks and bakers school, he dropped out to become an infantryman. He served in combat with Gen. George S. Patton’s division. He received the U.S. Army Combat Infantry Badge and the Purple Heart, among other medals.
