Well, actually they do. A lot. Every few years, Lucy Rodriguez, of Discovery Bay, her extended family and a handful of close friends take a page from their childhoods and produce a wacky and wild two-hour variety show of singing, dancing and skits. The production, laboriously organized and fine-tuned over the course of a year, features a stage, backdrops, spotlights, sound system and elaborate costumes and has become a summer highlight for close friends and neighbors lucky enough to receive an invitation. This year’s show, held Saturday at the Livermore home of a friend, played to an audience of 200.

“We all did puppet shows and made our moms suffer with all our vintage clarke's ballet slip on shoes, flats, ballet flats. nude shoes, us 6.5 uk 4 ‘Watch this!’ recalled Holly Fahey, a friend of the Rodriguez family who’s been to several of the family’s productions, “It’s exactly like that — an old-time family-values show where you can bring the kids, the grandparents, a blanket and a glass of wine …, They put so much effort into it, and it’s way better than going to a movie, They really make a big deal out of it.”..

The shenanigans had their beginning decades ago, when Rodriguez and her six siblings began singing, dancing and acting out popular commercials for their parents and neighbors. “If we had company, we’d act out a joke or commercials,” she recalled. “Sometimes the neighbors would come over, and at some point we began doing shows in our garage, where we could get more people to watch us. We’d use sheets to make curtains. What’s funny is that we still use sheets to make our curtains.”.

Years later, in 2003, the siblings began brainstorming entertainment for a friend’s 60th birthday party, “We realized vintage clarke's ballet slip on shoes, flats, ballet flats. nude shoes, us 6.5 uk 4 a lot of family members would be together … and someone said ‘Wouldn’t it be great if we made a show?’ “, Another production was undertaken in 2007, This year’s show was the most ambitious yet, It involved 26 performers interspersed with video contributions from family members in Mexico, elaborate lighting and sound systems, a curtained stage and a concession stand, Staging the show requires a year’s worth of brainstorming, writing, set design, construction, costume-making and monthly organizational conference calls between family members to sort it all out..

This year’s highlights included an Elvis impersonator; flamenco dancer; comedy pantomime of a bull and matador; and a singing Aladdin and Jasmine performance. Past audience favorites range from a Pink Panther parody to a silly Chippendale dance routine. “It’s a lot of work, but the most fun is the time we’ve spent together as friends and family doing something other people don’t do,” said Rodriguez’s sister-in-law, Wendy Rodriguez, of Livermore. “We serve dinner, practice the skits, laugh and have a good time. That’s as much fun as the performances. And it’s having the kids involved with the parents; seeing the excitement in their eyes and how much fun they’re having and saying, ‘We should do this again!’ “.

The family’s children and teens happily participate in the shows, some on stage and others opting for backstage work, “I believe we don’t have enough performing arts in school right now, and I feel it’s crucial for people to learn presentation skills,” said Lucy Rodriguez, “But more than that, I remember hearing my niece’s daughter at age 12 turn to another girl and say ‘Oh my God, this is going to be so much fun!’ I (remember thinking) we’re all vintage clarke's ballet slip on shoes, flats, ballet flats. nude shoes, us 6.5 uk 4 on the same page; we all love it, Whenever we’re stretched thin and I haven’t slept, I remember what Olivia said, and that brings me back.”..

Everyone involved loves the fun of performance night, but the real reward for the hundreds of hours the show requires is the time spent with family and friends throughout the year preparing for the production, said Lucy Rodriguez. “It’s not always perfect, sometimes we disagree, but it’s about being able to work through it, to tell them how I feel and to have them tell me and to have us understanding each other and still getting ahead,” she said. “I’ve grown so much closer to them.”.
