But the California Symphony’s program Sunday afternoon at the Lesher Center for the Arts managed to achieve what it set out to do: take the audience on a musical tour through some of the world’s most attractive short works from the 19th and 20th century repertory. Sunday’s program, which launched the orchestra’s 2015-16 season, boasted some genuine highlights, including the second half’s excellent performance of “Finlandia.” Cabrera led a cohesive, rich-sounding reading of Sibelius’ symphonic poem, one that flowed from the brass section’s forceful playing in the opening pages (representing Russia’s oppression of Finland) to the beauties of the serenely melodic hymn.

Every section got a turn in the limelight. The brass gleamed in Rimsky-Korsakov’s score, and the low strings growled convincingly in Reinhold Glière’s “Dance of the Russian Sailors,” drawn from the composer’s 1927 ballet, “The Red Poppy.” In Dvorak’s Slavonic Dance, Op.72, No. 2, the warm-voiced, Old World sound of the violins was arresting. Acknowledging that Dvorak has always been one of the composers closest to his heart, Cabrera led a shapely, ideally paced performance.
