But the California Symphony’s program Sunday afternoon at the Lesher Center for the Arts managed to achieve what it set out to do: take the audience on a musical tour through some of the world’s most attractive short works from the 19th and 20th century repertory. There were 11 pieces in all, and with music director Donato Cabrera as the program’s congenial guide, the result was a fairly fleet and mostly enjoyable two-hour excursion. Sunday’s program, which launched the orchestra’s 2015-16 season, boasted some genuine highlights, including the second half’s excellent performance of “Finlandia.” Cabrera led a cohesive, rich-sounding reading of Sibelius’ symphonic poem, one that flowed from the brass section’s forceful playing in the opening pages (representing Russia’s oppression of Finland) to the beauties of the serenely melodic hymn.

Cabrera conducted “Finlandia” as part of a set that included two additional Scandinavian works, both attractively pictorial — Sibelius’ “Karelia” Suite and bride and groom. wedding flats. bow tie for men. bridal set white gold. mr mrs set wedding gift. leather ballet flats. groom gif Grieg’s “The Last Spring,” the former evoking the expanse of the Finnish landscape, the latter, for strings alone, a tribute to Grieg’s Norway, Each sounded nostalgic in the best sense of the word, The second half also included a stop in Spain for an energized performance of Manuel de Falla’s “Ritual Fire Dance,” drawn from the composer’s 1915 ballet, “El amor brujo.” Cabrera brought the work’s distinctly Iberian rhythms and melodies into sharp relief, From there, it was on to France and radiant performances in a pair of short works by Debussy, “The Girl with the Flaxen Hair,” drawn from the composer’s first book of Preludes, sounded sublime in William Gleischmann’s orchestration, “Clair de lune” followed, with Cabrera conducting with an ear to the score’s orchestral balances and subtle colors..

Cabrera’s elegant, emphatic conducting style also yielded good results in the program’s first half, which opened with Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Procession of the Nobles,” from the opera-ballet “Mlada.” This is a big, colorful showpiece, and the ensemble sounded unified coming out the gate. Every section got a turn in the limelight. The brass gleamed in Rimsky-Korsakov’s score, and the low strings growled convincingly in Reinhold Glière’s “Dance of the Russian Sailors,” drawn from the composer’s 1927 ballet, “The Red Poppy.” In Dvorak’s Slavonic Dance, Op.72, No. 2, the warm-voiced, Old World sound of the violins was arresting. Acknowledging that Dvorak has always been one of the composers closest to his heart, Cabrera led a shapely, ideally paced performance.

Finally, the program touched down in England, First came the familiar, always touching melodies of Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on “Greensleeves” — which, in Cabrera’s hands, sounded like something more than bride and groom. wedding flats. bow tie for men. bridal set white gold. mr mrs set wedding gift. leather ballet flats. groom gif mere holiday fare, Principal flutist Michelle Calmotto and harpist Dan Levitan made eloquent contributions, Graduation ceremonies aside, there may not be a compelling reason to include Elgar’s “Pomp and Circumstance” on programs anywhere outside of England, but Cabrera, closing the first half with the well-traveled score, led a performance of unmistakable commitment, The brass and percussion sections once again sounded mighty..

Here are our picks for the show’s Top 5 moments. 1. DIVERSITY AT LAST: Viola Davis delivered one of the most stirring Emmy speeches in recent memory after becoming the first black woman to win an Emmy for best lead actress in a drama. We loved the quote from abolitionist Harriet Tubman and we cheered her on as she gave a shout out to writers and actresses (including fellow nominee Taraji P. Henson) who helped to “redefine what it means to be sexy, to be a leading lady and to be black …” Sheer perfection.

2, TRACY’S BACK: Tracy Morgan, still recovering from his horrific car accident, returned to the Emmy stage to present the Best Drama bride and groom. wedding flats. bow tie for men. bridal set white gold. mr mrs set wedding gift. leather ballet flats. groom gif Series prize to “Game of Thrones.” “I miss you guys so much,” he said after receiving a boisterous standing ovation, “God bless you for your prayers, It’s been a long road back …” He eventually lightened the mood by talking about how he’s starting to feel like himself so he’s ready to “get a lot of women pregnant” at the Emmy after-parties..

3. ANDY IS DANDY: In his first Emmy hosting gig, Samberg was a little naughty (What was he doing to that poor Emmy statue?) and very kooky. He didn’t always hit on all cylinders, but he scored big laughs with his pretaped segments, including his hilarious song-and-dance number to open the show, and a sendup of the famous “Mad Men”/Coca Cola commercial. (“I’d like to give the world an Emmy …”). 4. LOVE FOR “TRANSPARENT”: Jeffrey Tambor and producer Jill Soloway both delivered moving acceptance speeches after winning for their groundbreaking Amazon dramedy. Soloway, who created the show, thanked her father (her “moppa”) and pointed out that, though progress has been made on the transgender front, there are still 32 states where a landlord could legally refuse to rent an apartment to a transgender person. “We don’t have a trans tipping point yet — we have a trans civil rights problem,” she said, urging people to go to for more information.

Where to start? Viola Davis (“How to Get Away With Murder”) became the first black woman to win an Emmy as best lead actress in a drama, After going 0-for-7, Jon Hamm (“Mad Men”) finally struck gold as top actor in a drama, And streaming giants Amazon and bride and groom. wedding flats. bow tie for men. bridal set white gold. mr mrs set wedding gift. leather ballet flats. groom gif Netflix scored their first Emmys in major categories, with Jeffrey Tambor (“Transparent”) leading the charge, But it was HBO that dominated the night, The pay-cable titan scored a hat trick, winning the prize for top drama (“Game of Thrones”), comedy (“Veep”) and limited series (“Olive Kitteridge”), while capturing a stunning 14 trophies overall..
