Director Jon Tracy is no stranger to reinventing classics. His past shows at Hinkel, Shotgun Players’ “The Farm” and “In the Wound,” were bold reimaginings of Orwell and Homer, and his “Tempest” for Marin Shakespeare Company replaced sorcery and spirits with mad scientists and robots. This latest production also rests heavily on a theme. The men in “Much Ado” are returning from a war, so Tracy casts all the characters as either soldiers or nurses. Brooke Jennings’ costumes are modern-dress but not too modern; the gents wear suspenders instead of belts. The setting seems to be early to mid-20th century; Jade Shojaee’s cheerful nurse assistant Ursula is often practicing tap dance or singing an a cappella version of “Show Me the Way to Go Home.”.

Some of the soldiers are played by men and some by women, which mandala rainbow ballet slippers, intricate mandala, mandala shoes doesn’t always change the genders of the characters, Stephanie DeMott’s boyish Don Pedro, their leader, seems more like an outspoken cadet than a commander, Soren Santos’ Claudio is friendly but tempestuous in his emotions, Don Pedro’s scheming brother Don John has become a sister; Ari Rampy’s Donna John is always seething or outright tantruming with rage for reasons unknown, but she does seem to dig Claudio..

Sarah Mitchell is a fantastic Beatrice, crackling with sardonic wit, and she’s well paired with Tim Redmond’s similarly snarky but endearingly outmatched Benedick. Amy Nowack is an amiable Hero, and Jennie Brick is remarkably mild-mannered as her mother (usually her father), Leonata, who appears to be the head nurse here, usually accompanied by her sister Antonia (a sympathetic Tamar Cohn). The most interesting innovation is the treatment of Dogberry, the malapropism-spouting, dimwitted constable. In this version, Dogberry is a soldier with a severe head wound played by TheatreFIRST artistic director Michael Storm, who’s onstage in bed for most of the play and suddenly springs to life. All of his assistants, watchmen, judges and other characters in Dogberry’s subplot are just him talking to himself, except for the two conspirators he happens to catch. Everyone else regards the patient’s ramblings with pitying patience.
