SZ-Notes
- Personal Information Manager |
SZ-Notes® is a tool for personal productivity that allows to organize and easily find information of any type, organized in categories which are completely configurable. Every topic can have its own alarm, to help you remember things and appointments.
SZ-Notes® was written with the aim of creating a
simple and flexible tool to save, search and organize
information: you can consider it a sort of electronic notes, lightweight and
easy to use.
Information are organized in categories, that can be added and renamed at will. All the topics can be deleted, renamed, moved or copied to any category.
You can find all the topics
including a specified keyword in the title or in the body.
More than one topic can be open at any time, and you can exchange
information by using the Windows clipboard.
The topics can be minimized or resized at will; if you minimize the main form, SZ-Notes is reduced to an icon in the traybar (besides the clock), cleaning away the desktop from any window belonging to it. A simple click on the icon will restore all the windows to the original size and position.
SZ-Notes verifies if it is already open at startup, so you can bind a programmable key to its execution (if your keyboard has such a feature).
The font used for the main interface can be chosen by the user, to allow
an optimal reading of the information.
The topic window is resizable; the font, format (bold,
italic, underline), colour, alignment (left, centered, right),
size and indentation are freely selectable.
Information can be copied and pasted from any application, using the Windows clipboard.
Every topic can be exported to an RTF file (Rich Text Format) and printed to any system printer.
All the functions are selectable using the toolbar or a key combination (for greater productivity).
Every function is accompanied by a tooltip that appears if you leave for a short time the cursor over it. The icons are, however, easily identifiable and therefore every function is simple to understand.
The last settings (including window size) are saved, so whenever you open a new topic you don't have to touch anything to restore the optimal working conditions.
Every time that the topic is saved, SZ-Notes updates the last modification date/time, which is always displayed in the lowest part of the window.
An alarm can be associated to each topic; a sound will be played at the requested date/time.
The alarm sound can be changed by replacing the file alarm.wav, which is found in the installation directory.
Every alarm can be one-time, or automatically repeated. In the last case, SZ-Notes automatically set the alarm according to the selected repetition (daily, weekly, monhtly or yearly) immediately after the alarm is played.
When the alarm is played, SZ-Notes is restored (if it was minimized to
the traybar) and the topic bound to the alarm is displayed.
All the settings, the categories and the topics are stored inside a single
MDB file (Access), that can be easily copied and restored as necessary, to
guarantee the safety and the integrity of your information.
The interface of the program, including the tooltips, is available in two languages: Italian and English. You can instantly change the language by using the menu in the main interface.

Q:
Can I store graphic images inside a topic?
A: Yes you can, but it is not advisable: graphic images inside RTF files take up
a lot of memory and require a lot of time to be saved and loaded. If you insert
a large image inside a topic and click on save the operation could require many
seconds to be completed, even on a fast computer. It is better to save the image
inside the Documents folder and to save a link to the image inside the topic.
Q:
Can I read the MDB used by SZ-Notes?
A: Yes, it can be opened by Microsoft Access, just like any standard MDB file.
Q:
Can I use more than one data file with SZ-Notes?
A: SZ-Notes always opens the MDB file inside the folder where the executable
resides; therefore, you can copy the program and the other files needed (alarm.wav, sznotes.mdb)
to distinct folders and use separate links to use different MDB files.
Q:
Can I start SZ-Notes minimized?
A: Yes, just run the program with the parameter "/M".
Q:
Why does SZ-Notes tell me to check the date/time?
A: Since SZ-Notes alarms make use of the system date/time, when they are
incorrectly set you could miss your appointments. SZ-Notes does a simple check,
by saving the date/time when it was last run: upon startup, it compares the
current date/time with the date/time saved and, if this follows, the user is
warned to check system time.
Q:
Why SZ-Notes tells me to close all the windows before quitting?
A: If any topic is open when you try to exit, SZ-Notes cancels the request
because there could be topics modified and not yet saved; in this case, by
exiting you could lose information. Close any window by using "Save" or "Abort"
before quitting SZ-Notes.
