Lavanya Kumar, Bascos’ best friend, said Bascos wanted to study nursing and transfer to San Jose State University. Kumar described Bascos as passionate about exploring, independent and willing to try new things. Kumar and Bascos became friends in fourth grade and lost touch after a while before reconnecting in eighth grade. She said Bascos loved listening to music, watching funny movies and talking about the places she wanted to travel to. She said she has a lot of memories of inside jokes between the two of them, pranks and hanging out at the mall.

“We would always talk about how we both couldn’t wait to become adults with our own apartments, …We always talked about traveling and even had our first destination in mind, … Like some cliche, when we turned 21 we wanted to go elegant and sophisticated baby zebra ballet flats with hot pink/shocking pink grosgrain ribbon bow accented with rhinestones to Las Vegas … we were going to make our own epic memories,” Kumar said, Bascos’ ex-boyfriend, Kevin Van Nguyen, was arrested Oct, 6 on suspicion of stabbing Bascos, He was arraigned on Oct, 8 in Santa Clara County Superior Court on charges of murder and battery..

Nguyen, who is being held without bail, was arraigned on one charge of murder with a deadly weapon and intentionally lying in wait; one charge of battery against a person with whom the defendant has, or previously had, a dating or engagement relationship; and one count of battery, against Bascos’ boyfriend John Souza, according to a police statement of facts obtained by this newspaper. Perez said she had never met Nguyen, but had heard of him. “I think they met in 2013 and they were off and on. Her parents disapproved of him so I believe she hid her relationship from her parents,” Perez added.

Another friend, Vanessa Torres, knew Bascos from eighth grade and said she remembers her distinctive laugh and that she cared about others and their feelings, “Her and her family were always very welcoming and made me feel like part of the family, I remember trying out makeup for the first time in her room during a sleepover,” Torres said, “Something that makes me very sad is that when I think about why Danica and I drifted apart, it was mostly because of her boyfriend, … I didn’t like him, He took all her time and next thing you know I couldn’t hang with her without hanging with her boyfriend, They had a lot of drama, I remember walking in the mall with them, He was awkward and I didn’t like him, I just distanced myself from the whole situation, You’re not supposed to say elegant and sophisticated baby zebra ballet flats with hot pink/shocking pink grosgrain ribbon bow accented with rhinestones something against your friend’s boyfriend, I felt so deeply broken when Lavanya told me what he did to her, Danica’s death will forever be a scar on my heart.”..

Milpitas Unified School District Deputy Superintendent Cheryl Jordan issued a statement: “When our students graduate from our schools we expect that they will journey on to fulfill their goals and experience the joys of life, never do we think that promise will be cut short by death. Danica’s tragedy is bewildering and devastating, it is news that stops us in our tracks. We feel deeply for Danica’s family as we keep them in our thoughts and prayers.”.
