Oakland’s Ubuntu Theater Project has put the labor back in Labor Day with “Waiting for Lefty,” Clifford Odets’ 1935 play about downtrodden workers standing up to crooked bosses. All summer the new Oakland company the Ubuntu Theater Project has been staging a bold selection of plays in nontraditional spaces appropriate to the stories being told: Marcus Gardley’s “Dance of the Holy Ghosts” in an Oakland church, Tarell Alvin McCraney’s “The Brothers Size” in an Albany auto shop, George Brant’s “Grounded” in an airplane hangar, and now “Waiting for Lefty” in a vintage car showroom.
The power of the immersive setting is immediately apparent when one enters the space at Oakland’s Classic Cars West, In a dynamic staging codirected by Ubuntu co-artistic director Michael Socrates Moran and company member Emilie Whelan (both of whom perform in the play), the cross-stitched ballerina (ballet) cushion cover - medium to large - blue cast is spread all around the room, silent and still, with their heads down as if in mourning, The audience is seated in the round, with the large cast of 19 among and behind them on all sides, The show begins with a haunting a cappella rendition of Lead Belly’s “Bourgeois Blues,” one soulful voice being gradually joined by others and thunderous stomps and claps until it’s almost overwhelming, Then the meeting begins in earnest..
Not quite an hour long, the play is really a collection of vignettes framed by a union meeting of cab drivers, most of whom are bursting to go on strike (inspired by a real-life taxi strike in New York City in 1934). The mood in the room is volatile, with the workers loudly cheering and booing speakers and chanting, “Strike! Strike! Strike!”. The shifty union secretary (MacGregor Arney) tries to convince the crowd that a strike would be counterproductive, trying to intimidate dissenters by calling them Communists. Everybody wants to know where their leader, Lefty, is, and everybody’s getting increasingly agitated. There are some passionate rabble-rousing speeches by workers in the room (Terrance White, Sarita Ocon, Sean McIntyre) and some slick rhetoric by the guy brought in to talk them down (EJ Gibson).
As heated and immediate as this scene is, the play doesn’t stay there but keeps jumping around to thematically related scenes at homes or in other industries, Some of them clearly involve the taxi drivers themselves, while others follow seemingly unrelated workers who may or may not become cabbies after losing their other jobs, cross-stitched ballerina (ballet) cushion cover - medium to large - blue Driver Joe (White, resignedly helpless) braves the furious recriminations of his wife (a formidable Whelan) for letting their family starve instead of standing up to the bosses who exploit his labor for peanuts, Another cabbie, Sid (Moran, anguished and adoring), has to face the question of whether he can be with his true love (a defiant Britney Frazier) without dragging her down with him..
In other scenes, the head honcho at a chemical firm (a sinisterly smooth Colin Blattel, Ubuntu’s managing director) tries to strike a Mephistophelean bargain with an earnest lab assistant (Francisco Arcila), and a world-weary doctor (Ariel Luckey) has to tell a promising young colleague (Tim Barnett) that the hospital has to make cutbacks based more on connections than merit or seniority. Every one of these moral fables of the class war also contains fiery speeches as worker after worker is radicalized by the sheer injustice of their collective plight. It’s not a subtle piece by any stretch of the imagination, but in Ubuntu’s hands it’s an awfully stirring one that makes you feel, just for a moment, that a revolution is close at hand.
The class of 2015 includes National Football League Pro Bowler Andre Carter (Oak Grove); former superintendent Joe Coto; San Jose Police Chief Larry Esquivel (Yerba Buena); Lt, Col, Curtis Green, Retired, (Yerba Buena); East Side Union High School District trustee J, Manuel Herrera (W.C, Overfelt); cross-stitched ballerina (ballet) cushion cover - medium to large - blue non-profit leader Camille Llanes-Fontanilla (Mount Pleasant); community leader Chandra Lopez Brooks (Oak Grove); Central Coast Section Commissioner Duane Morgan (Oak Grove); non-profit leader Lorena Collins (Independence); Santa Clara school board trustee Noelani Sallings (Santa Teresa); music and dance educator Anna Stearns (Oak Grove); and Alameda County Assistant District Attorney Terry Wiley (Santa Teresa)..
The Thomas P. Ryan Hall of Fame was established in the early 1970s to honor the outstanding achievements of East Side high school graduates. Nearly 100 East Side graduates have been inducted into the Hall of Fame, among them Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang, NFL quarterback Jim Plunkett, playwright Luis Valdez and U.S. Congressman Mike Honda. The East Side foundation sponsors an inductions ceremony semi-annually to honor the legacy of the district’s alumni. “The 2015 inductees are a diverse, talented, and inspiring group who continue to have an impact on our community,” said foundation President Ed Buller. “It is our privilege to welcome them into the ranks of the finest graduates the East Side has ever produced.”.
